Step One:
If you previously followed my mms tutorial. You must return to cydia and uninstall the ios4 mms fix. After that reboot your phone.

Step two:
Navigate to Settings>General>Network>Cellular Data Network. Then input the following settings.

Under Cellular Data
Apn: epc.tmobile.com
UserName: Blank
Password: Blank

Under MMS
Apn: epc.tmobile.com
Username: Blank
Paaword: Blank
MMSC: http://mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc
Everything else goes blank use the image below as reference. Reboot your phone.

In the initial release, blackra1n jailbroke all iPhones and iPod touches running on iPhone 3.1.2 firmware except for the newer 8GB iPod touches. The update, blackra1n RC2, jailbreaks all iPhone and iPod touches, but the iPod touch and iPhone 3GS running the newer bootrom require tethered jailbreaks, meaning blackra1n must be run each time the iPhone or iPod touch is rebooted. There were a number of issues jailbreaking iPhone 3G devices under the original version which GeoHot claims to have fixed in the new release.

GeoHot’s blog reports the following changes in RC2:

* Fixed all issues that you might had when jailbreaking iPhone 3G with blackra1n RC1.
* Tethered jailbreak for 3.1 OOTB iPod touch 8GB and all the new iPhone 3GS’s.
* Fixed Icy issues.
* Works on both Windows and Mac.
* If you used RC1 with success, no need to rerun

Caution #1 : A restore is going to wipe the iPhone clean. Hence, please backup your iPhone using iTunes and then proceed.

More info about these custom firmware files :

* Has factory boot logos (Apple and restore cable),
* Only Cydia, No Icy
* Preserved Unlock baseband (that is the whole point of a custom firmware, right?!)
* Activated/Not Activated (Check the files carefully)

Prerequisite (recommended) :
If your iPhone is already jailbroken at the current firmware (3.0, 3.0.1, 3.1), it will be a hassle free upgrade! Restore mode will work just fine with already jailbroken iPhones.

Step 1) Download Files for iPhone 3GS (Please read the following carefully)
* Download the following files ONLY if you have an Official iPhone contract with your cell carrier (ATT and others….)

OR

* Download the following files ONLY if you don’t have an iPhone contract (T-Mobile and others…)

* You should now have the respective firmware file with an extension .ipsw (make sure it is .ipsw or else, it will give you an invalid firmware error) . Follow the steps in order :

* 1)Launch iTunes and connect the iPhone to your Mac / Windows computer.

* 2)If your iPhone is already jailbroken (if you see Cydia on your iPhone!), put your device in Restore mode (Turn iPhone off, keep holding Home button while you plug it in to your computer). Proceed to step 7. If not jailbroken already, continue to the next step (3).

* 3)If you are aware of DFU mode, proceed to *7. If not, continue reading.

* 4)Turn your iPhone off. Press and hold the Home button and the Power button at the same time for 10 seconds.

* 5)After exactly 10 seconds release the Power button. Continue holding the Home button until iTunes pops up a message saying that it has detected an iPhone in recovery mode.

* 6)The iPhone will show you a blank screen (black).

* 7)Click on ‘Ok’ to the prompt displayed.

* 8)For a Mac : Hold Option key and then hit Restore button.

* 9)For Windows : Hold the shift key and then hit the restore button.

* 10)In the dialog box that pops up, browse the downloaded custom firmware file that you downloaded in the download section.

Step 2) Give it few minutes to perform the restore. Once the iPhone is up and running, proceed for software Unlock using Cydia. Follow this guide to install Ultrasn0w to software unlock your iPhone 3GS.

New iPhone 3GSes are shipping with an updated bootrom that is resistant to 24kpwn. Dev-Team member MuscleNerd confirms that the new bootrom, iBoot-359.3.2, is no longer vulnerable to the memory segment overrun exploit.

This is the first time Apple has upgraded the bootrom during a normal production cycle, rather than when a new model is introduced. The bootrom is a snippet of code that runs at startup time, and checks on the status of the boot image. It’s generally used to verify that the image has not been corrupted, but can also be used to check for unauthorized firmware. The 24kpwn exploit – otherwise known as 0×24000 Segment Overflow – bypassed the signature checks on iBoot and allowed unsigned firmware to be loaded. The new bootrom makes that impossible, so currently shipping 3GS phones cannot be jailbroken until a new exploit is found.

To determine if your new 3GS is running the new bootrom, just check System Profiler while the phone is in DFU mode. Versions of iBoot prior to 359.3.2 should still be able to be jailbroken using known methods.

As if just having the iPhone isn’t enough to make one look cool, Directed Electronics has introduced a new iPhone app that will make you look cool just getting into your car.

The app, dubbed Viper SmartStart, enables users to control parts of their Viper SmartStart-enabled vehicle directly from the new iPhone or iPod Touch
app.

A new install will run about $499. But you will only have to cough up $299 if your ride already has a Viper alarm system. Of course, you will also need an active subscription to Viper’s Smart Start service. If you don’t already have the service, your first year will be free. After that, you’re looking at $29.99 a year. But at least the app will work wherever you get a 3G signal.

As if starting your car from your iPhone isn’t snazzy enough, imagine a cold winter morning turning into an instantly toasty ride by defrosting your car before you even leave the front door. Here in Syracuse a guy like me could use an app like that.

Pwnage Tool 3.1.4 is out, jailbreaks the 3.1.2 release of the iPhone software for iPhone 2G/3G/3GS and iPod Touch 1G/2G for all you OS X folks who’ve been waiting. It also now jailbreaks the iPhone 3G[S] out of the box! Check out their blog post for full details.

This release allows your baseband to remain unlocked at 3.1.2, but it does not unlock a new baseband put there by restoring to official 3.1.x. It is super important that people who need the unlock to understand they can keep it only by starting at 3.0 (or earlier) and updating solely to custom IPSWs that don’t update the baseband. For those who have been onboard the “unlock train”, simply install ultrasn0w via Cydia once you’ve restored to your custom IPSW. Don’t forget to turn off the “3G” setting in Settings->General->Network if you use T-Mobile in the U.S.A.

Note for 3GS users not already jailbroken and stuck at 3.1.x: this version of PwnageTool has a side feature to jailbreak your 3GS. It uses a simple implementation of the usb control msg hole found by chronicdev, geohot, and our very own gray. Now that the hole is public and in use, we expect Apple to close it by the next major firmware update. That’s why 3GS users need to get their ECID hashes for 3.1.x now, and need to stay onboard the “jailbreak train” in all future updates. For more details on what this means, please see our earlier posts or ask in our comments section (moderated by the always helpful @angie and @confucious!).

For the early adopters who ran blackra1n and are having problems with mobilesubstrate, winterboard, diskaid, or ifunbox, you can install a custom .ipsw from PwnageTool to fix these issues. That’s because all jailbroken devices accept a custom .ipsw created by PwnageTool. (However, if you ran blackra1n on a 3G or 3GS that means you updated to stock 3.1.x, and the carrier unlock is now out of reach. We’ll continue to work on a carrier unlock for the latest basebands, but the timeframe for such an unlock is unknowable.)

Note: If you use internet tethering on a carrier that doesn’t officially support it, you’ll lose it by going to 3.1.x. Stay back at 3.0 until a hack for that is developed.

to 3.1.2 using iTunes if you want to keep your unlock. Baseband cannot be downgraded. Check out the dev team’s offerings. Also blackra1n doesn’t hacktivate.

TO FIX ISSUES WITH IPHONE BROWSER, DISK AID, AND OTHER USB BROWSING SOFTWARE:

blackra1n doesn’t patch the services.plist. You will have to do it manually to get usb browsing back.

SSH into your phone and navigate to /System/Library/Lockdown/Services.plist

Copy Services.plist (copy the original for backup) to your computer and replace it with the following file:

Step 1: To downgrade your baseband from 05.11.07 to 04.26.08, you must first jailbreak your iPhone 3G running firmware 3.1 by following the step-by-step guide posted here.

Step 2: After you have jailbroken your iPhone, Go to “Cydia” on your iPhone and Search for “Fuzzyband” and then install this application.

Step 4: You should now be able to perfectly unlock your iPhone 3G using the latest version of ultrasn0w by following the step-by-step guide posted here.

NOTE: Downgrading of baseband will only work on phones that have the 05.08 (5.8) Bootloader from the factory. If you do not know your bootloader then you can run Fuzzyband and it will report the version number for you.
